The Olympic torch relay for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics was a 26,875 kilometers (16,699 miles) that ran from April 27, 1996 till July 19, 1996. There were at least 12,000 torchbearers and 2,000 of the torchbearers were Olympians. The torch started in Olympia, and was carried a distance of 2141 kilometers (1330 miles) across Greece. The torch was then flown over to Los Angeles. The flame visited 42 states and 29 state capitols, and passed through historic locations such as the Santa Martha Pier and the Hoover Dam. The flame also went on the Union Pacific Train, the National Pony Association, a replica of a 19th century packet boat, and the torch was carried into space for the first time in Olympic history.
